What sort of food might a roach coach/food stall in coastal Maine sell? Here in Arizona, they often sell Mexican food. Do they sell fish on the coast? During a scene where my character is walking along the beach or a wharf (haven't decided yet,) she comes across one and orders a quick meal; preferably something regional. I need to know what that might be. Any thoughts? |

So say you went to the Basilica at the Vatican on an ordinary weekday; there's no event, nothing special is happening, it's just some Tuesday or something. What level of clergyman would be attending the church, being there for pilgrims to go talk to, kinda being the priest-on-duty? |

Searched: Wikipedia pages on medical schools (US), "semester schedule medical school", "first year medical school", essay Clinical Experiences in Pre-Clinical Years, SWU's med school curriculum site (actual class material password-protected) Setting: United States, present-day (well, 2008.) One of my characters is in his first year of medical school. The story takes place in late spring, as the semester is drawing to a close. Due to some tl;dr circumstances, he has to leave town for a few days. After checking the time one morning, he remarks on what he'd be doing in class at that particular moment, were he still at school. I've found summaries of first-year classes, and basic course schedules, but no real info on what particular tasks med students face during this time. (e.g., are the classes primarily lectures or do they involve dissection, are there small group projects or is it all individual work, etc.) If it makes a difference, my character plans to go into cardiothoracic surgery. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Babelfish just gave me the kanji (which is interesting, but not quite what I was looking for) and I'm only coming up with online dictionaries when I try to work my Google-fu. I'm mapping out a cracked Twilight/Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness) fic and I decided, in a moment of evil whimsy to entitle it "Red Moon" (per the way the moon seems to turn red whenever Muraki is out and about and doing his thing; yes, the fic features Edwierd -- er, Edward crossing paths with the not-so-good doctor), but part of me decided to have the title in Japanese as well as English. Can anyone help me out here? |

This needs a tag of 'post-nuclear symptoms made to order'. :) I'm working on an SF story in which there was a nuclear detonation in a universe next door. Basically, a few people are able to teleport in this universe by slipping in and out of the blast zone in the other one. I can get lists of physical effects of radiation exposure, of course. (For instance.) What I need to know is how those symptoms would manifest in the specific scenario I've set up: these people are exposed to severe radiation in extremely short bursts, a few weeks to a few months apart, over an extended period of time. I'm particularly interested in the timescales of visible/obvious symptoms - teeth falling out, skin lesions, etc. I'm guessing there would be some immediate effects after each teleportation, as well as greater problems established by the repeated trips, but I don't know how the overlap of those exposures would work in practice. (I remember reading about people who deliberately race around the Chernobyl site but haven't been able to track that down. Any leads welcomed.) Ideally I want them to be killing themselves slowly - in general, able to keep this up for a few years before they're too physically worn out to continue - but if some people die right away (or others hang on for a longer time) then that's fine as long as it's within normal limits of the effects of this pattern of exposure. The scenario I've set out is what I'm currently working with, but if necessary, I could manipulate a) the length of time they're exposed, b) the length of time between exposures, and c) the intensity of the exposure (they might be able to shield themselves from the worst of it or be on the edge of the blast zone). Thanks! |

Fiddly little name question here. I want to do something with the genderswapped version of a male character of Indian descent (present day), which means finding a female name that makes sense as an equivalent for "Aasif." I've poked around sites like babynamer.com to find names with similar sounds, but they don't give me much of a feel for whether the names have completely different connotations, and I don't want to inadvertently pick a wallbanger. (Like how "Ethel" feels very old-fashioned, so it wouldn't be a good substitute for a modern-day character named Ethan.) Any suggestions? |

Computers, we hates 'em, yes we does, my Preciousssss! Or, in other words, yes, the university servers went down due to a power failure right before my two jobs were due to co-run an online seminar, and the whole thing turned into a late, rushed, unearthly mess. I was the initial contact point for most of the people involved. I hate feeling responsible for stuff that's not my fault. |

"I realized just how effective the demonization of welfare has been when I was actually shocked to hear kids, in a show targeted at other kids, being led in a chant that said being poor or on welfare shouldn’t be shameful and did not reduce their worth as human beings. Can you imagine a TV show, even on PBS, putting something like this on the air today? Our public discourse at this point says that being on welfare is shameful, and that those receiving it in fact aren’t “somebody.” They are dependents, lazy loafers, and their kids are just additional burdens on the state; they don’t have the same rights to dignity and respect as other citizens, and they certainly shouldn’t expect to get it." [Source] This picked up my mood considerably today. And while it's not specifically advice or a suggestion of some kind, maybe it'll pick up someone's mood too? ---------------------------------------- // edit: Throughout the course of the night I have been touched by so many of these stories and replies that I just wanted to say thank you. Just imagine.... For someone to reply, I think, there's someone else out there that isn't replying but might have been touched by this video, what you said, or what you're going through. And I think that's powerful. I also think it's evident that this is message has uplifted and made some of you stronger today so for those of you who would like, I have converted the youtube video to an MP3 so you can download it and listen to it when you need it. Just hold on everyone, it'll get easier. We're not in this alone. (hug) |

(Lord's day). Up, and to church, myself and wife, where the old dunce Meriton, brother to the known Meriton; of St. Martin's, Westminster, did make a very good sermon, beyond my expectation. Home to dinner, and we carried in Pegg Pen, and there also come to us little Michell and his wife, and dined very pleasantly. Anon to church, my wife and I and Betty Michell, her husband being gone to Westminster ... After church home, and I to my chamber, and there did finish the putting time to my song of "It is decreed," and do please myself at last and think it will be thought a good song. By and by little Michell comes and takes away his wife home, and my wife and brother and I to my uncle Wight's, where my aunt is grown so ugly and their entertainment so bad that I am in pain to be there; nor will go thither again a good while, if sent for, for we were sent for to-night, we had not gone else. Wooly's wife, a silly woman, and not very handsome, but no spirit in her at all; and their discourse mean, and the fear of the troubles of the times hath made them not to bring their plate to town, since it was carried out upon the business of the fire, so that they drink in earth and a wooden can, which I do not like. So home, and my people to bed. I late to finish my song, and then to bed also, and the business of the firing of the city, and the fears we have of new troubles and violences, and the fear of fire among ourselves, did keep me awake a good while, considering the sad condition I and my family should be in. So at last to sleep. |

Hello! I decided to type up this part of the book The Only Dance There Is by Ram Dass. This is the beginning of the section titled "Love as a State of Being." It's absolutely wonderful. I feel comfortable crediting my happy relationship with my boyfriend to this. Love as a State of Being It is only when you being to understand that if you and I are truly in love, if I go to the place in me that is love and you go to the place in you that is love, we are "together" in Love. We start to understand that what love means is that we are sharing a common state together. That state exists in you and it exists in me. Now the enlightened being- what happens to him is that he changes the nature of his love object from a specific love object to it all, finally. You would say that an enlightened being is totally in love with the universe, in the sense that everything in the universe turns him on to that place in himself where he is love and consciousness. So I would say that an interpersonal relationship that has any qualities of possessiveness in it, or ego drama of any kind, certainly undergoes changes as the nature of consciousness changes. And at the same moment I would say that as a person becomes more conscious, he understands that he has certain karmic commitments, that is, existing contracts which may be with parents, it may be with a husband or wife, or it may be with children- and that he cannot rid himself from these without creating a karmic cost- without leaving behind him some uncooked seeds that he's running away from. The game of enlightenment starts from exactly where you are at this moment, and therefore, if you have an existing social-emotional-sexual contract with another human being, that's where it starts. To say, "Well, I've got to go do my work on myself. I can't afford you any more" leaves a ripping which ultimately you've got to rectify. There's no doubt about it. You've got to work from where you are now. You just can't walk away from anything, any part of your life. You've got to bring it all into harmony at every new level. . . . ." |

Thanks to all who have served so that I don't have to. Here, have some thematically relevant music. All on my website, so right-click save, or use DownThemAll. Over the Hills and Far Away - John Tams. This is the theme music for the Sharpe series. In more thematically relevant news, we finished watching Generation Kill. I enjoyed it, although I don't think I am particularly fannish about it. On the other hand, I'm about to listen to the audiobook of Nate Fick's One Bullet Away. To all the French fans over there : Torchwood Children Of Earth will be aired on NRJ12 at 8.30pm every tuesday. It will begin the 17th of November. Though, as always on NRJ12, no original version will be available, only the dubbed one (but they dubbed the first 2 seasons very well imo) so nothing to fear :p
